Part of our Construction Series

Today we start a new series, planned for the Saturday editions, on the basic parts and pieces of a structure. Let us know what you think.

Laminated beams, also known as glulam beams, are made by gluing together layers of wood. This process creates a strong, durable beam that can support heavy loads. They are often used in home construction and remodeling for structural support. If you look at a typical brick ranch home from the sixties or seventies, you will open the front door into a small living room, then a doorway through the house center wall into a small den and kitchen area. Remodelers often want to open up this space and the glulam beam is perfect for this. Sometimes it can even be placed up in the rafter area and not visible inside the home.
