The Scope of Work

Communicate expectations - work smoothly. From the Construction Series

The Scope Of Work

The Scope of Work (SOW) is a narrative document that describes in detail exactly how you want the finished product to look. It may take multiple pages, but, whatever it takes, make sure you have every detail of what you want in it; your contractor is going to bid to this, and you are going to hold them accountable to it. This is very important, and you must make sure you and your contractor agree.

If you say, “I want two-inch blinds in the windows,” the contractor cannot get away with installing mini-blinds. It would be even better to say, “I want two-inch white faux wood blinds with matching trim header.” If you can cut and paste a picture from the internet, do it. Be as clear as you can.

Write this up in the same order you inspect the house—outside to inside, front to back, top to bottom. Describe what the yard should look like, including installed landscape. If you know the plant names, use them. If not, describe what you want the finished look to be, e.g., “low foundation shrubbery planted approximately three feet apart.”

Submit it to your contractor(s) and request a bid.
